What is RTI application to EPFO?

RTI (Right to Information) is a tool for common man to get information from any government office. Government is bound to respond to the RTI application within 30 days with all the necessary information. Under article 19(1) as per Supreme court RTI is a part of Right to Speech and Expression and EPFO comes under this. One can file and RTI application and ask for any information required.  So EPFO also has to respond to RTI application and provide the information.

However it is always suggested to file an EPF Grievance (Android App) Online before filing any RTI Application.

How to file RTI to EPFO

  1. Get a postal order or Demand Draft of ₹ 10 in (check RTI fee in your state) favor of Accounts Officer (Your EPFO office) like “Accounts Officer, EPFO Udaipur” if you want to file an RTI application to Udaipur EPF Office. Postal order from Post office is a cheaper option than Demand draft.
  1. Draft a RTI application regarding your problem. The application should be in the format described below.
  1. Subject should be clearly defined (Application for Seeking Information under RTI Act 2005)
  1. Address the application to Central Public Information Officer, Employees’ Provident Fund Organization, (Write complete PF Office Address)
  1. Clearly mention your complete details which should include your Name, Complete address with Telephone and Mobile Number, Email ID and EPF Account Number
  1. Now ask your queries regarding EPF withdrawal or Transfer Claim Status.

  • The most important part that you should make a declaration in the following format “I do hereby declare that I am a citizen of India. All the information provided above is correct according to my knowledge. I request you to ensure that the requested information is provided before 30 day period after you have received the application”
  • Provide the details of Postal order or Demand draft (PO/DD Number, date of issue, detail of bank or post office) as payment of fee for RTI application.
  • Sign the application and clearly mention your Name, Place and Date.
  • Now you have to send the application to the concerned authority by Registered or Speed Post only. RTI through courier is not accepted. Keep the registered post slip at a safe place as it may be required in future. If everything goes fine the application should reach the concerned authority in 4-5 days and you get the reply in stipulated time period of 30 days.

You can download the application format here:

RTI for EPF Transfer Status
RTI for EPF withdrawal Status

This was in case of EPF withdrawal but if you want to file RTI for EPF transfer you may need to file 2 RTI applications. This is because in the process of transfer 2 EPF offices are involved. So if your query is not solved from 1 EPF office you may need to file 2nd RTI application in another EPF office.

Why Two RTI to EPF

If you are transferred from Udaipur to Chandigarh then you will first file RTI application to Udaipur EPF office. From here you will come to know whether your application for transfer has been processed or not. It might have been rejected at your previous EPF office only. Now after getting reply from them you will know the status. If they have processed your transfer you will have to file another RTI to current EPF office (Chandigarh).

Note:

1. Never address your RTI application in name of officer as a new officer may be appointed in his place. In that case the current officer may take advantage of it and do not respond to application in name of previous officer.
2. You can type the matter or write it clearly on A4 sheet.
3. Be specific while writing application as some states have word limitation in RTI (Check your state)
4. Check the exact RTI fees in your state and make DD/PO accordingly.
5. Get complete RTI ACT 2005 details here.

    Hello Mam,

I raised an EPF transfer online which was credited successfully from my old account to new account but the amount transferred to new account is not appropriate. It is just one month EPF amount while the period of working was 1 year 6 months and 16 days. Kindly suggest how to get correct amount credit.
